Hi i have the chance of a cheap 1999 Nissan Terrano 2.7 tdi LWB with 96k on the clock. I know nothing about them, are they any good solid? reliable? pitfalls and weak area?

It will be a 3rd car and a general hack doing few miles bit of towing work and will never get washed unless i can't see out the windows.

To add does any one know if the timing is belt or a chain drive?

Cheers Scotty

Not much help, but a friend has one and he likes it. Same engine as the London Taxi so should go on forever, and can run on veg oil without mods. Rear seats fold flat and leave a lot of room, but he doesn't see over 30mpg

My mates dad had one for about 6 years from new in 2005, his was a LWB 2.7 TDI. Very agricultural engine, but ultra reliable. He had very little trouble with his, and his dad is the type to neglect his cars a bit. They drive ok though, quite comfortable and surprisingly, not soul soul-destroying slow either, his went alright considering what it was.

As someone said, same engine as a London cab, it's common place for those to fly past 500,000mi without major hitch. Probably worth a punt for a barge.

Check for any gearbox issues, that's the only thing that went wrong with my parents Terrano and as you can imagine they cost a lot to replace. Funnily enough one of the other nissans my parents had developed gearbox issues.

It may well have timing gears rather than a belt or chain.

It was never a 4x4 that i would have looked at. I wonder how it would fair next to a Pajero as they are in my budget looking for a sub 1500 quid 4x4 hack. Vut if i could run this straight on veg oil even better smile

If towing on a public road then I hope you have a B+E licence if towing a trailer over 920 kgs MAM because the GVW on that is 2580 kgs
DIMENSIONS FOR 1999 Nissan Terrano 2.7 TDi SE Touring 5dr Auto Diesel Station Wagon
That one is £999 so under 1500 budget ?
