Decided to take my MX-5 out for a spin today and had a great time. Started off around Guisborough and made my way along the A171 and once I got just past Lockwood beck reservoir I turned right down to Hetton-Le-Hole, nice little back road and great fun just had to be vary wary of sheep making their way onto the road. Got to the A170 and headed west towards Helmsley where I turned off onto the B1257 up to Stokesley and then along the A173 back to Guisborough.

Most fun was the B1257, only came across one car on the first run and he politely pulled over to the side to let me past which was nice. I will be doing this run again soon for definite and will take pictures next time (I did the run twice today and forgot to pull over to take any).

Always some good roads to be found up that way, my personal favourite is Pickering - Goathland- Beckhole - Grosmont - Egton Bridge - Rosedale Abbey - Pickering just over 45 miles, but great scenery, good roads, some good climbs, especially climbing out of Rosedale over Chimney Bank back to Hutton Le Hole...

Castleton to Hutton past the Lion Inn is Blakey Ridge, which is a great road if you can avoid campervans and sheep. B1257 is lesser known but possibly even better and usually quiet as the A19 takes the traffic.

Great little circuit, and you can make a figure of 8 of it if you head east to Pickering and north on the A169 towards Whitby.

Good point Mostro, you could combine the route I posted with the one Philbar posted and get a quality figure of 8 route, you could cut out going through Great Ayton and past Guisborough on my route and head straight across from Stokesly past Easby and Ravengill Campsite rejoining the route further on, it's now my next drive out in just over a week (working nights this week so won't get a chance to go out till they have finished). Hopefully the weather will be clear and I'll get some shots on the route.

I spend quite a lot of time in that part of the world, but I've never really ventured away from the main roads across the Moors (the one that goes past the Hole of Horcum and the one that goes past Fylingdales).

I'd always assumed the Dales were better for driving roads, but never really explored enough to put that to the test.

I did a similar route to this on Monday morning, but the traffic was terrible, so I'm going to have to go up and do it again...

Started in Thirsk, then Helmesly, B1257 to Stokesley, Guisborough, A171, cut off the corner to stop at Goathland, A168 past Pickering to Malton, then A64 to meet our friends in York (Google maps link: https://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msid=21708351615... )
