Usually:

1) because they can
2) because there's no shortage of people with websites that have massive security holes which make it far too easy
3) because they can hold people to ransom over it

Well take some satisfaction in the knowledge that whoever did it is probably:

1) About 25 Years old.
2) Still a virgin.
3) Hasn't had a bath this week.
4) No job since he got fired from Burger King.
5) Still lives with his mum.

He might think he's the hax0r equivilent of 'Banksy' but really he's just a sad little moron. My site got done a few months ago because I didn't get around to patching my Joomla install.

Could be a disgruntled customer as well. If not, I'd love to know what exactly it is that these people do when choosing a website to target.

Probably not. "Team PentaTweak" seem to have hacked a handfull of other sites. Presumably they just go fishing for unpatched servers.

It's on a par with tagging, I suspect. In many ways.

Indeed. Much like tagging. (You didn't think I approved of what's happened to one of my favourite TVR dealerships did you?)
