I'm going to get a smaller 2nd tank, something like 60 litres. I'm never keen on the standard aquarium wooden stand offerings, look cheap & nasty. Assuming my general knowledge is valid.. 60 l = 60 kg, would something like chunky coffee table be up to the job?

Could be. A well built table that is....... With nice sturdy legs. If you think a fairly large adult male worth of weight would be standing on it. Plus on top of the water you have lighting, rocks, gravel or sand and so on.....

Indeed. Dont want another wet living carpet like I had last year (my fault, at home on day, re-filling tank with hose, failed to multi-task...)

We had a three foot tank, complete with wooden made to measure cabinet. Then we acquired a four foot tank, but no stand, so I joined two four foot shelves side by side and layed them on top of the three foot wooden unit. It's coped with the extra weight without issue. I reckon your idea will work fine smile
