Hire car docs

I'm hiring a small van to take down this year - normally go in my own car, but this is the first year I don't have an estate car to take.

IIRC, you have to take the original V5 and insurance certificate for your vehicle. What are the rules for a hire car in terms of docs required?

You will have to ask them for a VE103 form, this acts as the V5 for hired vehicles I believe.
