Well I think that's what I was asked by a Gendarme a few years back! So exactly what 'papers' are we required to carry with us as a driver? I've got my drivers license card but lost the other part, but then do they expect us to carry our insurance cert and car log book too?

Yes,

Carrying your insurance and log book are obligatory in France.

Perhaps you need to get a duplicate of your paper part of your license, as well.

Yes & if it isn't your car (company or borrowed) then a letter of authorisiation from the registered keeper.
I've only been stopped once in France by Douanes & all he wanted to see was passports & V5C for the car.

Hmmm, I wonder whether DVLA can get me a copy of my paper license in time? I'd better get on to them tomorrow!

Jim, you're not the 944 owner from Brograve are you?

O.K, not many about now and there's a white one in Beckenham that I thought could be yours. He's an enthusiast too.
