Groupset for a classic Brit frame...

Have stripped and left my Harry Quinn 653 road frame for repair/refurb after breaking the downtube. Assuming it looks as good as I expect it will on return (the repairer's work is well regarded), I'm wondering whether to rebuild with the mix of Ultegra/105 8sp that it has always worn or whether to chance my arm with Campag stuff. There's nothing wrong with the Shimano kit but I like the idea of a classic Brit frame with classic Italian running gear... the rear is spaced at 130mm and it will be on Shamal 12 spokes wheels so 8sp (and maybe 9+) should easily be poss. No rush to build and happy to Ebay hunt so any views on what would be nice...?

Why would you want a classic looking groupset with those modern wheels? 32/36 spoke handbuilt please.

Modern? They are the same age as the bike within a year or two...

Campag' Athena....the all alloy version looks great. A mate has it on his 90's Colnago, looks "quite" retro but with the modern touches.

Definitely agree with the Campag. I had a beautiful Chas Roberts frame from the early 90's that I used to race on, and was equipped throughout with Campag Athena from the same era. Absolutely gorgeous it was. Also the deep section Campag Shamal wheels looked stunning against the deep midnight blue of the frame that Chas built for me. Finished off nicely with chrome rear chain stays. Utterly superb looking bike.
