Hi everyone! Kinda new to the forum but I have been lurking about and have not posted anything before. I am 17 but I will be turning 18 in September so should I just wait till then ? Will insurance be cheaper?

I passed my driving test yesterday (Thursday) and I have been looking at insurance. I usually use go compare as I also have a 125 and got my insurance through one of the companies on there. I was looking at some prices for a 1Litre Polo 1997 and I couldn't believe my eyes...

£4800 was the lowest quote they could find me on third party. I think this is appalling, for a 1 litre car worth 500 quid it's going to cost 8 times as much as the cars worth.

I decided to give LV a quick go and they came up with £1800. I guess that's alright Considering the prices before. Since I have been using a motorbike does this mean I have 1 years no claim discount as well ?

I was just wondering if you guys and girls know of any good cheap insurance companies ?

Also what would be a good starting car ? I have been looking at Clios because the insurance is cheap but I'm not that into them, something with decent power and a bit sporty would do me wink

Cheers

£1800 is very good considering your age, a friend is paying £3000 for a 56 plate clio. To answer your question yes insurance will be a little cheaper so it's upto you if you'd like to wait or not.

This topic has been done many times!
Tips include adding parents to your policy as named drivers.
Buy an unusual car, that doesn't get crashed by young drivers.

Stick with the bike...build up a few years NCB. Then, though bike and car NCB are separate, there are companies out there that will accept Bike NCB then issue Car NCB at the end of the policy (Tesco is one of them).

In the meantime, you avoid the issue of being the patsy that drives everyone everywhere, you enjoy a decent bike (so still have independence) and get some road experience.

The Admiral group have always given me the best quotes from 17 (I'm 20 now).

You really just need to get a quote on lots of different cars. I did it, and you might get surprised. Some of the less popular cars for guys your age might be pleasantly cheap to insure.

Insurance varies so much between people, there's not really a great deal of use in comparing against others.

No such thing as cheap companies when you are young buddy! £1800 is quite a good price for your first car, check out fully comp prices, sometimes it can work out cheaper. The companies all vary from person to person so no specific cheap one. If you can survive on your 125 for a bit longer id suggest waiting til you are 18 it will make a bit of a difference to your quotes when you try again smile

Congrats on passing your test btw! driving

Hope this helps
Clio's are good as you said, requote on one I just sold was £900 for a year with 2 years NCB and 3 points, moving into a Focus ST soon so its gonna be £2k again soon frown

Something a bit sporty and with decent power unfortunatley is incredibly unrealistic, perhaps look at a VAG 1.9tdci something they are quite torquey and can be remapped to give great performance (for a 17YO) whilst being incredible on fuel. Or check out a 1.4 Saxo Furio/106 Quicksilver, fun little cars, cheap to run and easy enough to drop the 1.6 into.

£1800 isn't a bad price. I paid that on a 98 1.2L punto 3 years ago at age 18.

If you can afford it, pay up front. Admiral/Bell/Elephant give a big discount for payment up front, and will probably come out the cheapest. Adding parents will help, I've been told the ideal is between 40-65. Obviously make sure they have no claims/points.

Last year that brought my insurance down £600.
