Hi
I am wondering if anyone knows of any community groups or clubs who offer shared workshop facilities for working on cars.

In recent years a lot of community groups in computing and electronics have been setting up shared workshops known as Hackspaces, these are community run places where members pay a monthly fee towards the upkeep and can use the space to work on anything they want sharing equipment people couldn't afford by them selves or don't have space for at home, from simple stuff like solder stations and pillar drills, to high tech stuff like 3d printers and laser etchers and fairly big bulky things like lathes and mills that most people would never have room for.

I am wondering if the same sort of thing exists for working on cars where people would get shared use of the sort of equipment most people don't have at home, like inspection ramps and engine lifts. but i have no idea what to search for, i've tried searching for things like car clubs and motoring organizations, i've not been able to find anything like what i am describing, does anyone know of anything like i've described ?

No but i wish i did. Sounds awesome. Used to have a set up similar back in the air force with the motor club, basically a fixed fee and you got to use all the workshop facilities and tools.

Pitstart in London NW does this. Rent a ramp/bay by the hr and they have mechanics on hand to advise if you get stuck. I believe there may be one up north somewhere as well.

lots of ways it can turn ugly , people abuse /steal tools , jobs that should take a morning go wrong and end up being stuck there waiting for parts or someone skilled enough to finish the job

There's a place in Milton Keynes called okdiy, i hired their spray booth to paint my car, much easier than doing it at home.

Yep. There is one near my work in Chesterfield. It's called 'J29 self service centre' and they come highly recommended
