Is there any benefits of the heavy crank pulley (with the rubber inserts) as fitted to later 1275's or could the older lighter pulley, off say an older 998 be fitted and would the lighter weight make any difference.?

The heavy pulley with the rubber insert is vital if you have a 1275 or bigger and want to use any serious revs (like over about 6300 rpm). It damps out the harmonic vibrations in the crank and, hopefully, prevents it failing due to fatigue.
Mini Spares do the original Cooper 'S' one, which is the best one to fit. It can make fitting the fan belt a bit tight, but you can always create a bit of additional clearance by sort-of 'bending' things slightly. You really need the original Cooper 'S' radiator bracket and shroud. I didn't have this so I welded the shroud to the bracket to avoid the heads of the bolts from being a problem when fitting the belt. Still very tight though.

Ahhh, in that case I'll re use that one then...thought it might just be a bit of modern gubbins to assist with ignition timing or some such in the original application.

Timing case back on, whats that oil thrower on the floor, must be the spare, off the third engine, ...no thats over there....

Lifting the block back onto the transmission, (for the 4th time) back breaking gasket goo everywhere, oh so the main cap oil seal goes on the other way, thats why this cast lump of **** wont go into place...

There's a lot to be said for ali blocks...

Tell me I'm still enjoying this...
