Neither of those are Mercedes' finest hour, and this is coming from a marque fan.
I'd suggest that you'd be better of with an early E46 BMW coupe with a 6cyl engine of some description.
Look at a 320Ci with the 2.2. More likely to have been owned by an old chap who cherished it than a 328Ci, albeit that's speculation.
If you don't want a BMW, what about an Alfa 156?

these any good? (ignore the gearbox issue im just wondering if the A4 is a good buy for that year?)
