A brace of British motoring...

Well I am a Northern boy and have never met a pie I didn't want to be closely associated with!!! I do think the similarity stops there though - oh saying that I probably would have t
tted that chap too... But I don't share his politics that is for certain.
In fairness I have to say the X-Type is a nice motor it is a 3.0V6 manual and the posh Ford can hustle when needed and on a recent trip to Germany showed an ability to eat miles in comfort and speed that many a comprable motor (especially one that cost £2.5k!) would struggle to beat.
Cheers SixF - they do compliment each other very well, I think the one that would make a nice compliment is a circa 2008 series XJR but I would miss the manual box too much..

Why does everybody obsess so much about the Mondeo platform thing when it comes to the X-Type? I have an S40 which shares a platform with the Focus (with a much greater degree of parts commonality than the X-Type, IIRC) to great effect - but even if it is mentioned, the comments are usually positive along the lines of, "it feels like a Volvo but it handles like a Focus" or "that must be good with the Focus ST* engine in it".
Is it just that it was one of the first heavily publicised platform shares and the public weren't quite ready for the idea? Must have annoyed Ford no end as they made a big deal about it in the press pack from what I recall; the idea being that as the Mondeo was getting rave reviews at the time, a baby Jag that was the same car made even better with a host of Jaguar-specific parts, design and changes would go down well.
* - yes, it did amuse me that on a heavily platform-shared car, someone picked on the one part that is entirely of Volvo origin!

I think of it as a Mondeo with a posh robe and a little bit of sick travels up into my mouth from my stomach
Odd comment. I understood the Mondeo was/is an excellent car. Or is just a sort of snobbery thing? Not sure why you'd be sick?

I think a lot of the animosity is down to the fact that people associate Jaguar as a luxury brand and Ford as a lower end one, so then sharing a platform is seemed as perhaps a 'rip off', con or people who buy the X-Type as something akin to social climbing by buying a run of the mill car made to look like something it is not to appear 'better'.
Personally I think that is all a crock of s
te... the equivalent to mine is a 3.0V6 Titanium spec Modeo and a good friend has one and he and I both agree the X-Type is both nicer to look at and drive.

Still love them now. They too have an X Type, the horribly underpowered 2.0l V6 BUT, credit where it's due, it won't set the world alight with its performance, but on a long run it 'wafts' as a Jag should and is a thoroughly comfortable place to be. My kids prefer the 'bumpy Alfa'
So do I come to think of it.
The only people that slag X Types off have probably never been in one let alone driven one.

I can never understand the criticism aimed at the X-type platform sharing with the Mondeo
A few things spring to mind, firstly that the Mondeo is a bloody accomplished car and nothing to be ashamed to be associated with surely?! Another point is that they are very different, inside the Jaguar is very obviously a class up. Compared to VAG differences between Audis & Skodas, the Mondy and X-type are worlds apart
