Platform sharing - who shares what?

I didn't know that the Ford KA was really a fiat underneath...

So who has shared what platform in the last 5 years and what will be shared going forward?

There are very few cars which don't share a platform anymore, for example the mk2 Focus, Volvo S40/V50 and Mazda 3 are all the same car.

Mazda MX-5 doesn't share a platform with any other car.

Generally anything low volume and specialised doesn't share a platform, but even that isn't a given. For example all Aston Martin's share the same platform, it is quite a unique platform though as it is variable in length and width.

The MX5 and S2000 are unique, the S2000 is quite odd, in that it was a completely clean sheet design (engine, gearbox, platform, etc) that Honda built purely for that car, then just dropped it.

I thought VAG held some sort of record with the A3, A4, Golf, Leon, Passat and some of the Skodas all sharing the same platform?

The Fabia doesn't, it's based on a mk4 Polo. Only the Polo, Ibiza and A1 share.

I think VAG just have one big, adjustable platform and everything from the Seat Citigo to the Bugatti Veyron are all the same. Or something.

I despise platform sharing. yeah, sure it means its easy to make plenty of models cheaply but it means there isnt a real choice when buying a new car - if you dont like the way a particular model drives or handles etc then you used to be able to go to a different manufacturer and have something completely different - now you're stuck with the same thing in a different wrapper

There were admittedly more platforms in the 70's - just think of them all - Escort, Avenger, Marina, Cortina, Maxi, Princess.

I mean, all rubbish, but at least they were different kinds of rubbish

Not a platform share as such, more a move the whole production line somewhere else, its based on the old A4 not the current one.

The 'B5' platform gave us the Passat, A4, A6 and Superb.

The 'A4' platform was Golf, Vento, A3, TT, Leon, Toledo, Octavia.

According to wiki, the A5 (PQ35) platform is used on the following cars.

VW- Rouran, Caddy, golf mk5 & mk6, jetta, eos, tiguan, scirocco, beetle, passat, sharan
Audi - A3, TT, Q3
Seat - Altea, Toledo, Leon, Alhambra
Skoda - octavia, Yeti, Superb

That's quite alot!
