Introducing the little rascal (106 GTi)

First off, I'll crack on with the pics.

So, here we have an ALMOST standard 106 GTi. I picked it up for around £800 a month ago, needing a new gearbox. Unfortunately once I changed the gearbox I then found it needed a clutch too.

Today when trying fitting the clutch I found out I had been sent the wrong clutch by CarParts4Less. bks Of course I didn't check the parts BEFORE getting the gearbox off the car, that would be silly of me

I've bought it due to feeling a bit stty as of late, and as some of you know I had a couple of Saxo VTS' before. I'm hoping having this to go out and have fun in will cheer me up a bit

After it's got a clutch on it, I'll be insuring it and hopefully coming to a few Yorkshire meets.

A few jobs need doing though, time for a list

• rear bumper paint missing
• interior carpet coming away from edge near glove box (common)
• drivers seat bolster wear (hoping to get a die kit)
• brakes are dismal, I think a 306 brake upgrade is needed
• few little bits to tidy up here and there, the engine bay needs some TLC!
• exhaust blowing slightly

On the last point though, I got under the car obviously when doing the clutch, only to find a PIPER sports cat exhaust system! So a bit of good news, they're worth quite a bit.

Shame about the clutch though, did you not check when you had the gearbox off?

Apart from the 16v badges its pretty much perfect!

The clutch appeared fine, and I knew the previous owner and he said it was fine. We fear it was contaminated with oil judging by where the gearbox cracked:

They come like that from factory (or was that just the saxo?), after halfords sold them and every chav stuck them on their car everyone assumes they are after market.

Always quite fancied one of these, used to have a slightly modified 106 XSI (1.4) quite a few years ago, bloody unreliable but bloody quick and lots of fun!

I like the history with Clarkson, it is a great find. I was a bit confused as to why you are selling the BMW as you appear to have liked it very much, but your advert explains it.

I work with a girl that has a very chavvy one. It is a 1.4 Quicksilver but she has added every little piece of crap on it. She likes it so I guess that is all that matters.

Looking at Danny's previous attempt with the Saxo, I doubt we would see a chavvy example.

That's just the Saxo VTS.

There is a Saxo VTS I see in the work carpark occasionally, stripped out with a cage int he rear, a suede steering wheel and always immaculately turned out. Still has the 16v badges on it too, must be one of the tidiest VTS' you're likely to find anywhere!

Lovely car op 16v TU goodness.

Shame about the gearbox, i went to Thorsby sprint a year back a guy with a vts engined rallye split his gearbox casing, told me hes broke more casings that he has internals to the gearbox, shame they made a great engine and paired it with such a chocolate gearbox.

Just ordered the 5" Jap Can exhausts and a few funny stickers off eBay for the rear window

Just seen some lovely rip speed alloys in halfords with a decent finance package on them, I couldn't resist! They'll be here for next weekend

My choice of first car was between a Mk5 Fiesta Zetec-S, Mk5 VW Polo GTI and a 106 GTI. Went for the Polo as it was the best all rounder but still wanted one of these. They are pretty rare too
