Nice easy one here lads, the remit is this:- £1k to spend. Must be sporty, quick or convertible (or interesting)

I have my eye on a E36 328i coupe that I am going to go have a look at tomorrow, other than that I am at a loss. I have scoured the classified for days, nay, weeks to find something suitable and it just isn't coming to me so I thought I might as well ask on here.

Any suggestions? I have no problem with 2 seats, (relatively) high capacity engines, insurance groups up to about the old 16-17 level (i.e 328i sport etc) but I am also open to oddball choices, barges and suchlike biggrin

Bearing in mind this will be a half-bangernomics car, with the intention that if I like it, I will look after it hehe but ideally suggestions will not crumble into dust unless they have around the purchase price spent on them in the next year smile

Any thoughts?

hehe

And, there it is...

It has been considered, but my friend has just bought a 2.8 Z3 and I sort of want to be able to keep up hehe Plus, they all seem to be bloody miles away from where I live (sa2)

This has been thought of but the problem is I currently drive a Mk3 golf cabrio and I really would like to get away from the front wheel drive 4 seat cabrio thing. I'll probably go back to it in the future but for now I fancy a change. Cheers for the suggestion though. good and left field thumbup

Impreza Turbo? Insurance might be iffy though.

I have this sort of dilemma all the time, and I have yet to adequately satisfy it! I'm currently trying out a 328i SE - lovely car.

Rubbish. You just need to keep an eye out. E46s are now getting into this sort of level, there are plenty out there.

I'd definitely have an mx5. I'd say on a cross country blast he wont be getting too far ahead of one.

I dunno about that. Power usually overcomes!

Nose heavy though and not as lightweight and nimble as an MX5.

I bought an MX5 for £700 a few months ago, i'd a real hoot in it. Great little thing.

Prone to HGF in early guises. I'd only consider a MG TF these days as they had the problem pretty much cracked by the time they came out.

Most of the sensible suggestions having already been covered, what about a Dutton Phaeton?

Ugly as sin, slightly agricultural engineering, but likely to be one of the fastest and (care of kit car insurance) most insurable cars you can find for circa £1,000.

Alfa 75 Sadly it's an auto and has an unusual take on Italian electrics (and fuel...maybe not an ideal combination...then again, it is BBQ weather)

ETA...this is a st idea. Ignore it. I just quite liked it.

How about a Volvo T5 for barge?
