I got hold of a second hand PC with XP installed. Its all started to go a bit wrong so I was going to reformat the hard drive but I only have windows 2000 pro on CD and it won't let me down grade. Can I reformat the hard drives without being in windows?
If you get a Win98 bootable floppy that will have all the tools on it.
Just fire up fdisk and then flatten the existing partition and then stick the 2000 CD in and boot from that.
You can do it directly with the recovery console but I dont have much experience with that...
I've used the recovery console, and let XP format the drive, but I prefer to use the win98 route, using fdisk to delete partitions etc before re-installing any O/S.

You can start up from the windows 2000 cd and format the drive as part of the setup process.
Cheers people started it from the disk, all works OK
Thanks
