Best way to birmingham from newcastle ( staying in Wolves .)

Hi got a trip to birmingham tomorrow, Last time I went I took the A1,M1 then 42 across.... but that was a good few years ago ( before speed cameras etc )

What I wanna know is which way is best.....

We are staying in wolverhamton (sp?) the first night..... so a1 to leeds then m6 ???
