I've been looking for a new car for a few weeks now, around the £10K mark, and I can't believe that you can pick up a seemingly lovely 911 for about £9,000 (http://beta.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/porsche/911-carrera-996/porsche-911-2dr-tiptronic-s-facelift-impeccable-history-must-c/233295)
Am I missing something here? Will the sub £10K 911 ruin me in repair bills?
Really, I am looking for some advice and opinions for anyone here. Is this a really stupid idea? I would be using the car as a DD, however I wouldn't be thrashing her, and I do keep a pretty tight maintenance schedule.
Would love to know some stories of ownership, good or bad. What do I look for when viewing one of these? Is there a buyers guide?
Thanks,
Tony

PH Feature: The £10K Porsche 911(996). Why wouldn't you?
In general, no reason not to.
Plenty of things to look out for when buying, but there are a lot of cars out there to look at, some good, some bad.
Won't be cheap to run, but shouldn't be ruinous either if you buy a good one.
Good luck.

I feel entitled to reply to this thread since I have recently bought a sub-10k 996 myself. I was wary due to the internet scare stories about engines going bang with no warning, but with some research I've discovered that the infamous IMF bearing can be replaced with a robust one for less than new clutch money, so I went ahead and got myself my first Porsche.
I found a very good local independent specialist whose prices are very affordable. Parts are not so expensive as people may suggest (just avoid buying from Porsche)
The car itself is in great condition and I plan to run it to very very high mileage. Daily driver, use it for shopping and so on. I don't see why it shouldn't last.
IF it breaks, I'll fix it. Consumables aren't terrible in prices.
I believe these cars are the bargain of the century. I was dithering for a long time but right now I love it.
One thing: I was very lucky with my car as it's in outstanding condition inside and outside.A couple of others I'd seen in the same price band were proper nails.

I bought a 996 2 years ago (still have it) that was good value for money back then and have not had any real issues with it, I will do most of the work on it myself (apart from the engine) as it is only a car at the end of the day! Has the same braking system as most other cars, same suspension etc, except better of course!
Go for it, they are really good value for money at the moment.....
