Hi all. I've recently noticed a bit of chat on checking the mileage on a Porsche against the recorded operating hours on the ECU. It also seems to be appearing in adverts for used cars.

Is this possible to check with a 2002 996 C4S?? I've recently bought one, and although I have no real reason to suspect the mileage is incorrect, I would be interested in finding out as much info as I can. If so, would it only be someone with dealer diagnostic equipment, that can read the necessary info?

Thanks in advance.

You can do this with the Durametric which costs around 300 GBP or for that matter the Chinese clone does it perfectly and costs around 20 GBP. The authentic Durametric will do loads more and is much more up to date for other diag tasks.
Alternatively get a good indi to read and print out the info.

So what info am I looking for on the ECU? Would any good indy know what to look for?

You just need the vehicle data which is on the first screen on Durametric after selecting the relevant Porche model. For my Turbo it comes up with Motronic 7.8 and shows:
Part Number
Supplier Number
Module Number
Ignitions (range 1)
Ignitions (range 2)
Operating Hours Counter
Vin
Etc,etc
You just need the operating hours and also any ignitions.

Any good Porsche indi can do this for you easily. You can then compare your mileage with the operating hours as has been explained on other threads.

I bought one of the cheap clones so I could check this when looking for a potential car to buy. To do more than ECU read out and clear codes etc you are better with the authentic version, depending how much DIY you are going to do.

A good indy with a Porsche tester will be able to read both operating hours and mileage from the DME Vehicle Data on your car. Both the instrument cluster and DME can be 'clocked', but the DME is often overlooked. Also, the operating hours of the airbag module can be checked and compared to the DME operating hours. There will be discrepancies, due to the way the data is collected by each module, but there shouldn't be major differences.

Edit: Motronic 7.8 will show the following in the DME Vehicle Data:

Number of ignitions, range 1
Number of ignitions, range 2
Operating hours counter
Vehicle Identification Number
DME control unit ID
Order type
Country code
Engine type
Engine number
Transmission type
Transmission number
Radio/PCM code
Body colour
Convertible top colour
Interior equipment code
Number of programming operations
Navigation system code
Total distance in km
Option codes

Great, thanks for the replies. I've had a look on Youtube and I've seen the screen in use. It looks very simple!

Can anyone recommend one of the "cheapo" readers? My mate has a "Launch" OBD machine that can reset fault codes, but I'm not sure he'll be able to view the operating hours!? A small, cheapo hand held one would be handy for having in my toolbox.

You would need to use a Porsche tester to read all the values in the DME. Durametric, and clones, won't read them all.

Any OBD2 handheld scanner/code reader will read sensor values on DME7.8. They will read and reset OBD2 codes, but not all the Porsche-specific ones.

Not too familiar with the older cars but that might be the rev range (range 1 overrevs).

911 Virgin have a helpful article on rev ranges & the broader ECU read out: https://911virgin.com/engine-revs/
