Hoping you guys can make my mind up for me.

Having looked around I have decided on one of these 2, which would you go for & why?

Thanks

One is the newer version of the other.

You just need to look at the price difference then look at the spec differences and decide if the more expensive ones features make the difference worthwhile.

In reality the one with the better lens on will give the best picture everything else being equal.

You will keep a good quality lens longer than you keep the body.

I was in the same situation a month ago, deciding on which of those to go for, I have ended up choosing the 600D (yet to purchase) as it was the better option in my eyes, bit more up to date, also, it does have the "flippy" screen, which I would like to have.

What do you want it for?
I found some newer camera's had slower auto focus and slower frame per seconds than older models,

Supposedly the 650D is going to be announced Friday that may complicate matters further.

This (assuming it is significant and important - it may not be depending on use) is often true for secondary update models.

If the model line has a big move forward - typically new processor and new processing chip - it will likely have frame rates and data transfer rates that are improved compared to the previous model, They may, for example, deliver the results that the previous model but one delivered in terms of speeds but oofer better image quality and size (or whatever).

The next model released will often reset the speed value selling proposition and also add something else to the mix plus a price hike for iitial sales.

However in practice the marginal release differences are probably not so noticable in practice in most situations.

All of that said (and especally if you plan to use video a lot but for many other reasons even if you don't) I would go with the newer model if it had a fold out screen that the previous model does not (and possibly visa versa.) There are many situations where use of such a screen can provide extremely interesting photographic possibilities and may well be worth any additional cost that comes with the deal.

I would go for the 550D and put the saving towards one of the endless list of things you'll realise you'll need/want after buying one.

I don't see that many situations where I would need a flip out screen and you can get a tripod plus change with the difference in price.

I picked the 600D, bought the bag, new memory cards and an extra lense....then got cold feet that the 650D was going to come out soon so have decided to wait a while to see what happens. I hate waiting, but I know I would be kicking myself and drooling over the new specs.

I am no expert but have had my 550D for around four months now and I love it, have a 100-300mm IS USM and am looking at a decent Macro now to complete my kit. Definatly rate this body though.

Thanks for the replies.

The camera would be used for a wide range of pics. From family portraits to landscapes & hopefully get better a track days.

Total amateur at the moment, have a Canon s95 which is used fairly frequently so would like to upgrade & learn.

Cheers

Well S-O-A-B;

"On paper the 650D’s upgrades make it worth the extra money: A gorgeous new touchscreen, continuous autofocus in video mode, on-board stereo microphones, and improved photos thanks to a new image processor."

A good £400 more than the 600d though.

650d looks a beast but also a lot more money.

40f2.8 stm and 650d look like a nice video combo.

If your not into video then the 550d is probably as good.

I've got a 550D and it's great! Friend has one also and they are very happy with it. Just need to upgrade the lens IMO.

The 650D certainly looks interesting and with 5fps offers a decent frame rate for action shots. It could well make a useful second body whilst having a specific role for some types of video, for example.

However if shooting RAW the 5 fps buffer is rated at just 6 frames - which is not much. Irrespective of the frame rate a typical motor sport incident (for example as this is s car forum) is likely to last 3 to 5 seconds. On that basis a 6 frame RAW file buffer looks a bit lacking. Let's see what the full reviews say.
