RS6 - what am I letting myself in for?
Discussion
Main things to check
DRC - common problem on these and best to get one with aftermarket shocks like Bilstein PS9's etc....
Gearbox - Check that the Gearbox has had a couple of services/checks as this was a real achilles heel of the car. Some have failed and been replaced under warranty as early as 20k miles and others have been lucky.
Cambelt - the interval is 5 years or 40k miles.
Brakes - can cost around a grand+ for complete overhaul.
One of the regulars on here (fellow E61 M5 owner) wrote these words about his RS6 ownership.
"Don't buy an RS6 if you just want a fast family estate for £13k - £20k and expect it to be all smiles and plain sailing. Im sure, seeing as you have owned an RS Cosworth (i am also a Escort Cosworth veterain - despite my age) and a Range Rover that you will be no stranger to the plague of repair bills and service bills. The RS6 owner rarely goes a month without feeling the need to check the car into a garage to make sure its feeling alright. When its poorly, then so is your wallet.
DO buy an RS6 if you want a car that turns heads, ticks all the right boxes as far as options, luxury and quality is concerned, and gives you a warm feeling everytime you press the loud pedal (so long as you are in the right gear).
A C5 RS6 is a lifestyle commitment and if you feel that spending £1k on a belt change, £1k a year on rubber, £700 on a yearly service, £1200 on brakes every 2 years etc etc, plus the DRC change, plus a warranty £1k to £2.5k (if you can get cover), live with a potential £5k - £7k bill for a new box, is a bit too much then this probably isnt the car for you."
