Anyone considering a new M5?
Discussion
Hi
Just in case there is someone one this forum thinking of buying the new F10 M5 I thought you may be interested to know that I have just traded in my 2012 M5 against a F10 Touring.
It is immaculate with 1200 miles, the new "12" plate and at £66k is the cheapest car in the country. Nice spec in Monte Carlo Blue and has the benefit of the five year service pack. Was just over £78k!

A great car that I had little use of due to breaking my shoulder...idiot! But with the boat season now upon us and the need to tow and transport bikes etc the touring should do the job... I am sure I will notice the 400 hp drop in power"

These F10s are not selling at all well.
They're stunningly capable alright, and no doubt I'll get one eventually, but the absence of that glorious V10 is noticeable......it feels to me more like an RS Audi than an M-car.....and the sheer size of the things is just crap....like a 7-series FFS!!
I hate this move away from high-revving, normally aspirated engines.....I think I'll stick with my E60!

I think the problems are simple....VAT at 20%, Bentley GT as a rival and although somewhat different as a drivers car, the Bentley and also an Aston have the image. I see in London a great deal of Panamera's and people love the image of the Range Rover. The M5 is a great car, incorrectly priced and badly marketed here in the UK. Anybody know how many BMW were hoping to sell?
It was a good car and did everything it was expected to.
The fact that I have bought another F10 shows that I like the car in principal but I prefer to have my driving fun in smaller cars at speeds closer to the speed limit than the jail bating speeds the M5 likes to operate at.
For someone needing a spacious, well equipped performance saloon it is certainly a contender however in this financial climate and with a good number of cars for sale then the financially wise should tread carefully and explore the market before writing out a cheque!
Meantime I will be collecting my 520d today and cruising around with the torquey diesel, hopefully enjoying nearly 50 mpg and probably wondering why on earth I let the M5 go. Time will tell.. At least I have an sl55 at hand when the need for speed arises!

I've had an F10 M5 for about 6 weeks and I can understand your thinking. The car is very competent at middling speeds, but is somewhat dull to the touch until the more extreme settings are dialed up - and then, look out! It actually reminds me a lot of the E60 in this regard - similarly too narrow in its abilities. I was expecting a smoother executive car feel too but the DCT has a jerky take up compared to a decent automatic. No doubt it is a weapon (for a sedan car) when you are in the mood for fun, but I've got other cars for this. I'm not about to quit the M5 though - it is a complex car that takes some getting to know so I'll persevere. The fact that I have bought another F10 shows that I like the car in principal but I prefer to have my driving fun in smaller cars at speeds closer to the speed limit than the jail bating speeds the M5 likes to operate at.

I bought an E63 Estate (with Performance Pack and LSD) at around the same time. It was intended for my wife but she prefers to keep her old E500 at this stage. This is a great car - and much more entertaining than the M5 at normal, though quickish, speeds. A lot of this is the sound - the M5 really misses out here - but also the MCT gearbox which is just better to drive as an automatic. The E63 feels smaller on the road too. I've no doubt that the M5 would run away from it if it wanted to, but the AMG is a lovely thing to drive. The M5 on the other hand is mildly disappointing - so far. That's honesty for you.

Tell me which dealership this is at, we are low on 5 series stock?????
I've had my f10 m5 for just over a week and I'm loving it, though I'm still running it in so can't really push it. It's much easier to live with than the e60 and far more luxurious. I really don't miss that crap SMG gearbox. The v8 sounds great, and will sound even better when I can push it, and the acceleration is unbelievable (even when keeping it within 5,500 rpm for run in). Ride quality is excellent. It does feel like a big car, but no bigger than the e60. I'm really glad I waited for the f10, rather than buying another e60.

Congrats! You'd better add yourself to the owner's list sticky. How about a pic? Here's mine.

M5's have never been massive sellers....I remember when the E60 came out quite a few got traded in pretty quickly because of the terrible economy/range....so this kind of feeling is nothing new for the M5.
In these economic conditions it's always a car that is going to struggle.....BMW just seem to have massive, massive problems shifting cars that are more than £60k....Merc must sell tens of thousands more cars than BMW at this kind of price level.
