No power if I floor it....

I know someone else had a similar problem not so long ago, but I can't find the thread. If someone can point me in the right direction or offer a solution I'd be very grateful.
If I 'stamp' on the throttle the engine doesn't respond for a second before giving me full power. In fact the engine misses completely. Seems to happen at all revs, but more obvious from idle or low revs.
Not good. I embarrassed myself yesterday at a set of lights when an Audi A8 TDi whipped me off the line. When they went green I hit the gas, got nothing for a split second then was up against the rev limiter with the wheels spinning. Lots of noise, but no go! He must have thought I was a complete muppet.
Anyway, I hope someone know an easy fix!
