I test drove a few last year and thought the multiair with 170ish bhp was the one to go for - good character, not too heavy on the nose, nice engine note and brisk enough to be fun but still need driving.

I wasn't a fan of the more powerful 232 cloverleaf, but if your budget goes that far, give it a go - you may feel differently

Sport pack / setup made quite a difference too and looks smart.

cool

OP, I do think that wide open throttle is best for performance but not fuel economy.

Apart from the fact that you are seeming to want polar opposites... have you actually tried Alfa Romeo. I believe they have a website these days.... tongue out

the 1.4 170hp looks to be a sweet-spot in terms of performance. the 120hp 1.4 has some tuning potential and might hit close to 170, but you'll be a few thousand quid lighter, so might as well spring for the facture uprate right away.

As for economy, the 1.6 JTDm is supposed to be not as sluggish as you'd think, so if economy is a concern, you might want to check that out. It can be modded/mapped, but if you want more then 10hp improvement, you need to mod the air intake tract as well, then it easily hits 135hp.

The 1.4 will probably be a guzzler though, if you drive it even a bit sporty. i've driven two 1.4 powered mito's (155 and 135hp respectively) and they did 30/35 MPG respectively. The diesel should do ~47 MPG easily, if data from older JTDms in 156/147s are any indication.
