Coughing and spluttering!

Hot start problem cured with new prestolite starter motor (thanks Jon) and car has been running well. Went to start it yesterday but engine won't idle or run for more than a minute...cuts out..restarts but pops and bangs (that bit is quite good!) but only seems to running on a few cylinders...this is my third TVR and not had this prob before...any ideas?

Maybe a plug lead has come adrift or may be touching one of the manifolds?
Would be worth checking this first?

i did check have a quick check of leads and distributor cap etc; but all seems ok...at best engine is only running on 3 or 4 cylinders (really rough) and cuts out very quickly car is normally garaged but was parked outside on a steep slope recently and with all this rain and wondering if water has got into electrics ......no obvious signs of water in footwell though....
