Hi,

I'm due to pickup a new car today (6th June) and exchange in my old car. The dealer is about 2 hours away. They have just called and said they are unable to provide the vechicle as arranged because the DVLA are on strike and they can't Tax a new car today. I have already told my insurance company about the new car and it swaps over today.

I called the DVLA and they stated that though there has been strike action recently, that they are not on strike today and there is no reason why they could not tax a new vehicle.

I called back to tell them this and they said it was the information they were given? They are going to call back..

Something seems a little fishy? What do you reckon readers of PH?

I reckon it'll be pissing annoying if true as my insurance swaps over at midday and I collect my new one at 12:45!!! Dealer is taxing it on his way in this morning!

I recon they tried to tax it on Friday when they were on strike, and thought they'd fob you off with that today as well, when they aren't... biggrin

Thanks for the replies!

This begs the question of why lie?? Are they hiding something and don't want me to collect the car today?

That's their excuse. Now you have to find out the real reason smile

Ring the DVLA and ask?! It's not rocket science is it?
Then call the dealer and tell him you've checked and are on your way to collect

They just called back and said they are going to 'try' and tax the car through the afrl system. How long does it normally take?

Reading the thread (or even the whole first post) isn't rocket science either, yet it seems to have defeated you.

The original post contained 139 words. Of which, 35 specifically explained about how he called the DVLA to check.

Reading a post...it's not rocket science, is it?

I'd say go now. Best case they'll have 'managed' to tax it by the time you're there. Worst case you find out what they're trying to hide.

OK I called back. Skipped the Sales person and asked for the sales manager. They were aware of the problem and said they were having issues with their afrl system (changed the story from the DVLA being on strike..). Anyway they said they were chasing with their Admin and hoped to have the car taxed today.. again they would call back.

I'd still go down there to be honest.

Why can't they pop to the post office?

I know you said you called the DVLA but there is an AFRL helpline which you could try to check the status - http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/DVLAonline.aspx - although they may not talk to you.

It could be there's some Government computer system issue? We had some passports delivered this morning and the courier said they couldn't log into the system to track the delivery.

Well it's a 2 hour drive away (I got a better deal from a non local dealer). However I think I'm going to give it 10 minutes and just go. For the sake of the amount of money I'm spending a 4 hour round trip drive is nothing in the long run.

New, unregistered cars, cannot be taxed at a Post Office.

Thanks I gave them a call. They asked for the manufacture (I guess it must make a difference?). Anyway they said it should be fine and they don't have any problems...
