well, got the cam swapped for a piper 285 and hey it started up first turn of the key!!

but will it tick over without sounding like a tractor??

next step - rechip and a visit to MA, i think is on the cards

The 218 cam was used in some of the later 500s and is the one in my Griff. Very smooth right through the range.

and top cat the cam timing will have to be "dialled" in.

checked oil pump today its ok but needs a new spring the tadpole plunger needs a good pollish, and will pollish the gears and shaft tonight fill with lpbp jelly assemble ready to put on, still looking for cams though?

Just got it back from the trimmers this afternoon, he's still got some little jobs to do so I will return it with a snagging list - but I couldn't wait any longer!

It should of been back about 10 days ago and I've got about a weeks work for MOT, so the original deadline of 1st of August has been and gone

The job is very good, I will do a new post with pics as I am very pleased with finish.

Sounds like you are having fun!!! Looks like the cam you've installed doesn't quite meet your requirements, do you think it just needs setting up or do you need to change it to something different??

i have been trying to get hold of Mark Adams for his tornado chip and a RR setup.

it makes good power but will not idle good, it hunts between 1000-1700 rpm but at least i have got rid of that ticking noise!!

FOUND THE CAUSE.

After i had pulled all the 3 hairs out of my head wondering what was causing the lumpiness, i decided to spray some brake cleaner around the inlet manifold.

It suddenly went smooth!!

one new inlet gasket later and it is fixed

Cam of course it would have been a great bargain for the kit, sorting the other bits out from real steel they have got some fancy overrev type followers, and a shim kit of course.
ps any chance of copying and sending me your cam litrature.
