Ashcroft Transmissions
Discussion
Has anybody used these guys for a reconditioned LT77 before, as they offer a same-day turnaround including new clutch for around £1100 which sounds (to me) quite reasonable?
The reason I ask is that it looks like something has gone to pieces with the selector mechanism on my gearbox - to say the gearstick is baggy now is an understatement! To add to this, second gear has had a distinct whine to it for a while now, so I'm wondering whether to bite the bullet and just get the whole shooting match replaced instead of spending a few hundred quid getting the selector problem sorted only to find six months down the road that second gear has gone as well.
If Ashcroft aren't recommended, is there anyone else to consider, bearing in mind the car is my daily driver so I can't do without it for very long?!

If the TVR uses the same gear (remote)shift mechanism as the Ginetta, the whole gear selector mechanism bolts on the back of the gearbox with 4 rubber bushed bolts. The problem is the rubber fails over time and then the whole gear shift starts moving about, it feels like a major selector failure. It just needs about £3 worth rubber bushes to sort it out.I cut a panel out of the transmission tunnel to get access to the upper ones, but I dont know how good the access is on the TVR.

The remote linkage on the LT77 Griffs is different to the One shown SD1. Its TVR specific. There arent the same rubber bushes. I would therefore assume the Chim LT77 uses the same as the Griff.
The gearlever itself sits in a bush type affair which wears. When worn gives a sloppy gearchange and poor gear selection as you are experiencing. Worth trying changing this first for a few pounds.

Thanks very much for the replies gents, I will try and have a go at the bush replacement before going whole-hog with the refurb. It seems Ashcroft aren't too up for doing the job on a TVR anyway, so it gives me a good excuse to have a fiddle myself. Better have a spare car ready in case I muck it up though!

Hi,I received a recommendation to try these guys: http://www.klassiktrans.co.uk/
They rebuilt a colleagues LT 77 in the S Series and he uses it for Sprints/Hillclimbs. I think it was an earlier version of our H (the last & latest & strongest) series.
They may offer to remove and rebuild & replace??
As you've discovered Ashcroft are mainstream Land Rover - their rebuilt box does sound a solid product?
HTH's? Grateful for any feedback?
