Advice on lowering my 4x4

Hi All,

I have just bought a 1998 4x4 that has been modded a bit and I want to make it more like the way it was made originally. It was raised 2 inches on Discovery V8 springs and although it looks cool I want the car lowered to normal ride height so I can get slightly better handling and I really wont be doing any serious off-roading anyway, so its way more than I need.

Could I get the springs cut to make them fit or do I really need to get some original type springs? I am not too clued up on such things so would appreciate some help/tips please?

Get onto an owners club - you should easily find a set of springs that suit your needs and then be able to shift on the unwanted ones.

Thanks for that. I had a feeling original ones would be best but I remember seeing a car program on the telly recently and they cut the springs.

On an owners club you will probably find someone who will swap your springs for theirs as they want the extra height.

Failing that you might find someone who has old springs they no longer want and will give them to you for the cost of a beer or two.

What type of 4x4 is it? Is it a Landy??

If so standard springs are likely to cheaper than paying someone to butcher the ones on it at the mo.

If you want better handling and on road use only, then you might be able to go with an even more on road bias setup.

If its a disco - im sure people will be willing to swop.

Failing that, Buy some stock ones off ebay and sell your tall ones. You will probably make money?

The UK version did it on an XJS I think...barking mad!

if you do it properly and the spring is in good condition then its fine

properly means cutting so the cut is in the same place as the current end and shaping the cut so it is will fit cottectly in the cups.

for a 2 inch drop I am guessing 1 coil needs to be taken out
