I am toying with doing a junkyard dog supercharger installation on an old 2 liter Volvo. The project is motivated mainly by the availability of cheap Eaton superchargers, but I know very little about them. My only SC experience was with Shorrocks and Judsons.

I could probably get by with either a M45 or M62. I'd prefer the M45 because it is smaller, but most of the M45s I see are off Minis, and have a auxiliary drive (for the water pump?). Is this a problem if it is not going to be used, or can it just be ignored or blocked off?

Also, the snout on the M45s seem to be usually very short. Is it possible to swap it out for a longer one? If so, would it have to be one specific to the M45, or could a junkyard snout from another model be used?

Are there any versions of these SCs that are particularly well suited for DIY use, and any to be particularly avoided (I notice some of the GM models seem to have long intake castings on the end that take up a lot of room).

Oh, and is there any serious downside to using an SC that is a bit on the large side for the motor, and just gearing it down so it runs slower?

Thanks!

Anything is possible with enough money and ability.

As for size...I'd sooner opt for a larger blower than a smaller one. It's a lot easier to make a big blower shift less air than it is a small blower shift more air.
So choose too small...and the only upgrade is a bigger unit.

The M45 is probably a bit small for your engine isn't it? The MX5 boys will have some experience of fitting them to other cars. The water pump is removable.

Wouldn't it be a bit easier to just use the exhaust manifold / turbo off a 740/760 turbo, and megasquirt it?

Probably, but not as much fun. smile

If you use an M45 you'll need to push it quite hard to get enough air out of it for big power - that means it'll run quite hot so you may want to intercool it. I reckon you'd get away with just the supercharger with an M62 since it'd run a bit cooler.
