I spied this in auto car http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/scoop/new-porsch...

Slight rehash of old news, but the first time I have seen mention of a Unveil date of march in Geneva. Here are some quotes from autocar for PHer's comment ....

The new model is set to be unveiled at the 2013 Geneva motor show next March and the order books will open soon after that....

Porsche insiders have hinted that the power output will be in the region of 450bhp in the new GT3...

The new GT3 is likely to have just the one transmission option: a PDK seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic....

Insiders have confirmed
that the even more hardcore
GT3 RS will return in 991 guise, but not before 2015...

That ones PDK as well, has anyone seen spy shots showing a manual gearstick?

Still bet it will be epic.

Did have a trawl through the 991 GT3 spy shots and all seem to be PDK where I could clearly see the wheel. Surely one of the test mules would have been a 7 speed manual, just for comparison purposes.

I was also hoping that they would start off with the 4.0 engine rather than use the 3.8 from the GT3RS to gain a bit more than 15bhp, and is it really 450bhp or 450hp (i.e.444bhp v 429bhp for 997.2 GT3)? Either way the (meaningless for a track car) 0-60 should be around 3.8 if comparable to the outgoing GT3RS

Also no mention of price - whats an extra 15bhp and 40kg down on weight going to cost wink

Will definitely be a game changer ... something to look forward for easter.

Quite. Preuninger was quite clear - the new engine will be a DFI. Disappointing reporting from Autocar.

Well lets hope they put some time in making a better centerlock design, coolant hose connections to the block and the engine is truly bullet proof reliable - on all of them. It'd be nice if there is a next generation PCCB that can handle track and isn't so delicate with tire removal - F1 changes tires pretty quickly and I havn't seen any carbon disks blow up. It just all has the air of a marketing exercise . . .

Whilst I love my Mezger engine, I'm no fundamentalist and it's the result that counts. Interesting though that the RS is scheduled only 2 years after the GT3 launch. It's going to be a long wait...

Current cup cars are the 3.8 RS and have the 3.8 Engine. I believe this model will be the one used until 2014. SO no 991 Cups til then.

True but I was under the impression that motorsport rules didn't allow the use of DFI, which should really mean a different engine for the GT3?

Wasn't the 997 gt3 launched about six months before the 997 gt3 RS? Seems a longer wait this time.

J-P, you are correct, ACO GTE class regs do not allow DFI at the moment. the DFI "issue" with regards to racing only matters to the RSR though, DFI can be disabled to allow an engine to compete, ferrari one would assume have done this on the 458 GTE. The Cups essentially spec race so can really use whatever they want, they require no homologation at all. 458 challenge runs with DFI as its a similar situation.

Homologation has already been fully achieved for the current 2012 RSR. if porsche completely stop making 997 this year then the 997RSR can race in GTE until 2020 with its current mezger engine.

..The 991 GT3 will be stunning I'm sure, the base 991 C2 was 10 sec quicker round the ring than the current gen2 7GT3, so let's say 2-3 secs on a normal circuit lap..

... and here are the 996.2 GT3, 997.1 GT3 and 991 S compared

http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/997-gt2-gt3-...

...quoting from this ...

Instead of forcing you to read the entire review, I'll post the result right now.

(these results are based on cars on STOCK form)
The 6.2GT3 is a better track car if you are mostly driving it on track
The 7.1GT3 is a better track car if you are driving mostly on street with some track visits.
The 991S is every bit as good as the 7GT3 and the preferred car as a daily drive that can shine on track with the best of them.

.. the 991 GT3 will be epic (hopefully wink )

Happy with my track car having a manual, allowing me to perfect my toe/heel technique, especially over the same circuit where I get the turn in and braking points right on the same corners. The drive becomes special, particularly with 3 figure speeds you can achieve - the manual gearbox adds to this. Usually after a day of driving I can't stop babbling about it!

When it comes to public roads, I seem to much prefer a semi-manual or Pdk - something with flappy paddles attached to the steering wheel. It's hard to qualify why. Probably too much going on and limited by two way traffic or Speed signs. It's not easy to take the racing line so I tend to focus on the feel of the car, the noise, overtaking cars or enjoying powering in/ out of roundabouts.

I suppose because I cannot treat a public road as a race track, I am not worried that the Pdk takes away some of the emotion of the drive, since I can enjoy other aspects of the car. For the track, I would not use the GT3 since for me it's too expensive to risk, it's too heavy even in the RS form, and you would go through expensive consumables at an alarming rate.

I'm sure many people will disagree with Pdk for the 991 GT3 and will want to use it on track, especially if buying secondhand, but for me Pdk is fine for road use and means my better half will drive it due lack of a heavy clutch. The track car then becomes as light and as mad as you like without being heavy on the pocket wink

Ultima GTR for the track - 970kg wet weight with an ls7. Lots of fun on the track in race setup wink
