After 13 years of ownership my old man swapped the engine in his S1 Elise for the Honda K20 Type R unit....wow.
Took the car through Oxfordshire at the weekend and was mightily impressed. Typical beautifully delicate Elise handling now with an engine to match.
Clearly not the equal of a high powered Noble on the straights, but a sound to die for when on cam and with more torque than I was expecting. Chase to 8k rpm is incredible.
Makes a nice alternative to the M400 when looking for something more exploitable for mere mortals. Also a bit of a Q car in an S1 Elise as people are expecting 118bhp, not 230bhp screaming up the road.
Will upload a vid when the weather warrants it.

I know a few people that have done this & as you say wow, fantastic results for minimal money & in the right hands can be very quick on track & reliable.Took the car through Oxfordshire at the weekend and was mightily impressed. The supercharged K20 are good at 300bhp, i have watched a few vids of those going round the track, the audi 1.8 turbo are even faster on the straights..but the latest conversion becoming popular is the 2.3l duratec, naturally aspirated, revs to 8500, 300bhp, bags more mid range torque than the K20 and outperforms the supercharged version.
The type R engine certainly offers more fizz though...lots of fun..i have been thinking recently abut building one for track..very cost effective track cars with a bit of work...

i have been in one round bedford autodrome
it was a lot of fun
i would like to try a supercharged or turbo version
has anyone tried an audi engined one ?
Yep. 430bhp >300 torques <740 kg's = 581bhp / Tonne. Fast as fit was a lot of fun

k and very frightening for the Uninitiated (Me)Too light and fast through the twisities for the want of staying alive and not getting a ban.
There are others out there with reported 500BHP.

Just finished the rebuild of my K20 engine in my caterham, the car ways 460 kilo and the engine produces 310 bhp and revs to 8800. so 640 bhp per ton it's incredible but very expensive to do it properly , I run the same spec a the VDV racing cars, one thing is that it's bullet proof and won't keep breaking. The type R engine certainly offers more fizz though...lots of fun..i have been thinking recently abut building one for track..very cost effective track cars with a bit of work...

How does the performance of the Caterham running 300bhp compare to your Noble. Is the Caterham tractable with that sort of power?markrichards said:

Hi Mark, Was at Ascari on Saterday with it and managed lap times of 2 min 41 sec with road tyres and the windscreen in place, it's very tractable, but like the noble you have to be progressive with the throttle you can't just nail it out of a corner ,it feels faster than my noble but that could be because you are outside in the elements and everything feels quicker. will take both to the next track day to see how they compare.
