Is it possible to get hold of one without having all the paperwork they say you need on the website? Do they give them out willy-nilly or is there a bit more red tape than that? I have no good reason to own one other than the prospect of cheap wiper blades, bulbs and oil is quite appealing.

Cheeky, I know, but if you don't ask...

I work in the motor trade and have a Halfords trade card (mostly for the reasons you mentioned) and I think all I did was take in a pay slip or my contract from work and I got one, it was quite straight forward.

You have to go through the computer system with them and they put your employer details in (who appear to be on a database) and they link that to the card (They did when I went with my brother when he got his one, I was going to try and get one too but no such luck)

I just asked, showed them a couple of recent receipts to show I spend with them and they gave me one. If you have no luck, try another store, they have a fair but of discretion to keep customers happy.

I was bored over a Christmas period in the office a couple of years ago and so knocked up some fake payslips with a pukka sounding garage name on it. Took them in, told them I was the service/ sales clerk and they gave me a card.

A few years ago I asked if there was a discount for IAM members (I am no longer a member of those bell-enders) and the manager said no, but said I could have a Trade Card if I wanted. All I had to do was provide name, address and received the card there and then. Even though I only buy bulbs It's worked out well - bulbs at £2-3 only cost me pence now.

It is all well and good making your own business cards up to get a Trade Card, and highly unlikely you'll get done for it but just be aware you are risking prosecution under the Fraud Act, Chapter 35 s2, Fraud By Misrepresentation http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2006/35/sectio...

Act said:
Fraud by false representation

(1)A person is in breach of this section if he—
(a)dishonestly makes a false representation, and
(b)intends, by making the representation—
(i)to make a gain for himself or another, or
(ii)to cause loss to another or to expose another to a risk of loss.
(2)A representation is false if—
(a)it is untrue or misleading, and
(b)the person making it knows that it is, or might be, untrue or misleading.
(3)“Representation” means any representation as to fact or law, including a representation as to the state of mind of—
(a)the person making the representation, or
(b)any other person.
(4)A representation may be express or implied.
(5)For the purposes of this section a representation may be regarded as made if it (or anything implying it) is submitted in any form to any system or device designed to receive, convey or respond to communications (with or without human intervention).

I've had one for years. Just showed my ID for the car manufacturer I worked for at the time.

I was told by the manager of one store that they would give them to engineering students aswell, but I already had one!

Hmm, really? Now that I've got to try, being a Uni engineer!

My mate has got one and he's doing a vocational vehicle maintenance course so they cant be that strict on looking on an employer's database...

I suspect with threads like this they will tighten it up or do away with it.

doubt it, the discount makes the costs about the same as a motor factors for most items (doesn't cover car washing stuff/bike items etc only tools/oils/maintenance items). only really useful for tools and halfords have better opening hours than most motor factors so it can be handy.
