Triumph-Misfire and difficulty starting from hot.

Could be roughly eleventy billion things. Start with the ignition system though - check the timing and make sure that's all OK, pull the spark plugs and check the gap and condition, swap the points, condenser and coil out one at a time to see if that helps.
My guess is that the coil is breaking down - if it's uncomfortably hot to the touch the it needs replacing.

thanks, the coil is the first thing I suggested too, I'll get him to check it.
