Triumph-Misfire and difficulty starting from hot.

My brother has a Triumph Stag (original 3litre V8) that has a misfire and is a poor starter from warmed up. Starts fine when cold. Any ideas?

Could be roughly eleventy billion things. Start with the ignition system though - check the timing and make sure that's all OK, pull the spark plugs and check the gap and condition, swap the points, condenser and coil out one at a time to see if that helps.

My guess is that the coil is breaking down - if it's uncomfortably hot to the touch the it needs replacing.

thanks, the coil is the first thing I suggested too, I'll get him to check it.

Has the fan been replaced for an electric one in the past?

If not, and it's still the original belt driven fan, it could be running a bit hot, possibly causing fuel evaporation in the carbs. Hence the hot starting issue?
