Boxster windscreen
Discussion
This is an enquiry for a friend :-) Does anyone know how much a new windscreen (inc fitting) for a boxster should cost? Rough estimate will do, porsche dealership have quoted her 650, which i reckon is a bit steep.
There's a chip in it, but i think auto glass need to have a look at it on the insurance first to get a second opinion - see if it can't be mended before being replaced.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Surely a piece of glass is a piece of glass....when the Mrs bought her Boxster it had a chip in the screen, quick call to autowindscreens or who ever was linked to the insurance policy and they come out and repair the chip for free.
If it's too bad for a chip repair, my TVR screen cracked from top to middle a few years ago....then it's a call to the insurance and depending what your glass excess is you pay that (between £50-£75 I bet) and it's new screen time, like the TVR I'd insist on someone doing it that is familiar with the type of car, and probably doing it in the depot and not the driveway.

And there lies the problem with glass replacement. There are some Automotive Glazing technicians out there that think exactly that. These are the ones that start up on there own and end up causing more problems for themselves and the customer. Some vehicles are pretty straight forward and should be no problem fitting if you have a decent amount of knowledge in what you are doing and know how to use your glazing products and then there are the jobs that need a lot more knowledge, skill and patience to make them fit correctly.
I digress though. If your screen is chipped get your insurance approved company or preffered company to inspect/repair it. If you are not happy with the repair then the company should reimburse your xs £0-£25 or take it off of the replacement screen xs £75+. Ask the company to make sure they send a Technician that is aquainted with your vehicle to ensure a top job.

The problem is that the PH has had freedom of choice removed from the equation. Time and time again, it is the larger companies that not only struggle with specialist jobs, but their inexperienced or careless staff are getting even the most basic of models wrong. This is not to say that the one-man-band outfits or small independents are squeaky clean, but across the 'fitting' board, generally speaking, the level of competence is extremely poor. Line up 100 fitters/technicians/engineers (or whatever else they want to be called) and you'll be lucky to find 10 good ones. Half of that 10 will still be lacking. I digress though. Quite a damning indictment isn't it? 5% of the trade (not based on facts, but my experience and opinion over 22 years). Some may argue that I'm being harsh, but when you see some the horrors we come across on a daily basis (mostly done by class A employed a-holes working the massive insurance and fleet contracts) you'd find it hard to forgive any excuse they may have to offer.

By the way, I don't think £650 for a job done right is far from the mark, how much would you be willing to pay for a job done bad? Even if it means paying and reclaiming I would want to choose who worked on my car. If the insurance don't want to reimburse you in full (less any excess) tell them you own a Porsche and you want the car repaired by Porsche. I fail to see how they can refuse to return a car to it's original state with original parts fitted by a main dealer.

order! order!
may I respectfully suggest that the gentleman actually submits a picture of said damage so we can address that facts of the case and not have to deal with such damning conjecture?!
I put it to you that the said damage may well be repairable if it is below the size of a guinea and that we should not judge the matter until a full inspection has been carried out and the resident experts herewith shall have a chance to make their pronouncements before the the wretched fellow shall cosign his pride and joy to beelzebub...
dispense with this insurance nonsense! I say you, and take matters into your own hands for the benefit of yourself and your trusty steed...

What I failed to say was that there are a lot of very good independent companies out there and will always do a first class job. But there are some very ropey ones as well. Also though the national companies have the same mix of technicians some of who are very good at their job and care about what they are doing, unfortunately there are a lot of ropey ones working for them as well.
Thanks guys, my friend ended up claiming on insurance and paying 75 quids excess - most sensible option all-round. Some interesting discussion here, I've only ever had experience of autoglass coming to repair small chips on the screen and although the lad was only around 18-20, he was keen, knowledgable and polite. Didn't notice anything substandard about the repair - it's completely invisible.
