My focus had a similar (but not the same) problem when a speed sensor failed. It'd throw errors and the engine would die when stationary if no throttle was applied.

I wonder if you have a duff sensor on a wheel/gearbox and it's giving the ECU a hard time working out what's going on between engine and wheel speeds.
