I joined my ship two weeks ago, and within a couple of days I could feel something was not right, sort of a man-flu type ache in my shoulders.

A few days later me and another guy started getting 'pink eye' which is some sort of Conjunctivitis.

Now we both have really sore throats, hoarse voices, and I still have the gooey pink eye.

The medic tells us it is a virus and there is really nothing he can do about it. There's no eye drops onboard and he tells us antibacterial cream is a waste of time. Nobody else seems to have caught this disease yet.

Is there anything serious this could be, Strep throat, Legionnaires, or do I just have to simply suffer and wait it out? frown

The ache is due to repetetive hand movements.

The sore throat is due to swallowing something gooey. Lots of it.

The pink eye is due to a foriegn substance in the eye. Copius amounts of it.

Yes, right, we've been hearing these incredibly funny and witty sexual comments and innuendo for the last week.

Just when you think you've heard all the really funny ones somebody comes out with a completely original gem, such as 'you should have locked your cabin door last night' or 'ha ha, the bosun knocked one out in your eye when you were asleep' or something equally amazing.

Ordinary conjunctivitis is one of the most common (and infectious) things out there.

The very best treatment for it is a few drops of breastmilk in the affected eye. (Sorry. But it's true. yuck )

It does indeed go away on its own eventually but it's so contagious, and so vile while you've got it, that not trying to get you on eye drops seems weird - there's a real chance of the entire lot of you ending up with it!

Very probably not the bad AIDS though. Am quite sure that doesn't kick off with eye grot.

Feel better soon!

You'll be pleased to know that pink eye is only deadly in South Park smile

Keep bathing it and it will go away on its own eventually, but eye drops really would make life easier.

Thanks for the sensible replies. biggrin We don't actually appear to have any eye drops onboard. The medic, who is fairly new, is a little surprised at this himself.

And we have no pregnant women either, so I guess I'm stuffed. frown

My eyes seems a little better today., but my throat still feels like I've gargled barbed wire.

Not sure if it'd get there fast enough to be any use but I'm more than happy to go and buy some over-the-counter ones and stick them in the post... (perhaps someone nearer by could do this to better effect?)

Thank you sweetheart, but I'm on a ship in the Gulf of Mexico, mail doesn't get out here. It is all electronic now.

You have a heart of gold. biggrin

Dude, it's not on to leave someone hurting/experiencing revolting leaky eye-pus for want of throwing 10g of stuff in the post.

But not getting post at all is just weird. You seriously don't get any mail at all, the whole ship, ever, while you're out of port?

Hopefully the Gunge of Doom has dried up now anyway.

We only do five weeks trips, but still, no snail mail of any sort, ever. We used to, but email and internet have made it unnecessary nowadays.

The dreaded gunge cleared up a couple of days ago, and the barbed wire throat has all but gone now. biggrin

You had a viral conjunctivitis, probably pharyngoconjunctival fever, which is highly contagious but requires no treatment as it will improve on its own. You should, however, try to limit your contact with other people to the bare minimum. Breast milk will not help, nor any other drops. Just bathe it with cooled down boiled water and wait.

Funnily enough, nobody else did catch it, which is a surprise on a relatively small ship like mine, where many people live in fairly close quarters.

Our medic has stressed to everybody about general hygiene, and washing hands fairly frequently throughout the day.
