Windscreen crack
Discussion
It may be possible to drill and fill the crack if it has not progressed too far into the swept area so as to compromise the mot at a future date, you may want to post a pic of it and invite comments from people in the trade. You will probable find a small white dot at some point along the crack normally about 2" from the edge.
If you do replace it remember that you have the right to choose who does the screen if you want to have a trusted local supplier to do it rather than take part in the national lottery of windscreen fitters from the large firms. Some insurers may tell you that there is a capped limit if you use another firm other than the recommended supplier but you should be aware that any attempt by them to apply dissimilar trading conditions to suppliers is illegal under eu anti competition law and point them in the direction of TFEU article 101 (d) if they start to try and dictate to you. You will have to pay for the job yourself and reclaim it from them but you may prefer this to have the peace of mind that you know the company that is doing the work.
Hope that helps

Hi
I have just noticed an 8 inch long crack in my 156 windscreen. It appears to have developed of its own accord as I havent had a stone chip that I noticed.
Run a ball point pen along the length of the crack. If the outer layer of glass had cracked, you should be able to feel the crack (very faintly) and if there is an impact, the pen tip will help you find it. If however, the crack is on the inner layer of glass, as unlikely as this is, there may be something a bit more serious to blame - corrosion, stress fracture etc.
