Just ordered a 7D!

I've had a 450D for a good few years now and I've outgrown it. I was also just told I've got a photo shoot with the Red Hot Chilli Pipers next Friday so I decided now was as good a time as any to upgrade. Now it's that rubbish time between ordering and receiving

So are there any 7D users out there who would like to humour me and show me some of their best/favourite shots.
Particularly low light gig photography as that's something the 450D always struggled with.

Even your thoughts on the 7D would be appreciated (good or bad). I've read loads today, but i'm in the mood for reading more...

I have 2 sigmas. A 17-70mm 2.8-4.0 and a 70-210mm. I also have a 50mm 1.8.

Mine was ace.

Take some time to learn how the AF system works and how you want it setup, it can get complicated.

You can have orientation specific focus points (i.e. different ones for each out of the 4 ways the camera is held, this includes the focus type, spot, single, group etc).

You can assign a specific point to a button or assign AI servo to dof preview or spot focus etc.

Pressing the joystick toggles between selected and centre point

I used to use single point with AI servo and back button focusing.

Yeah the AF did appear to be one thing I was going to have to get my head around, but the more I play, the more I learn and I'll be playing for days and days as soon as I get it - haha

I just leave mine in full auto.

I used to have a Canon 16-35L but I sold it to free up some cash a while back and bought a 430 EXII and the 17-70mm instead.
I thought i'd regret the decision, but I didn't. I was pleasantly surprised by the Sigma.

Ta. I use the 70-200 f2.8IS MKII mostly, not for the macro of course. Seriously, this lens and the 7D are made for each other. Go try one!

p.s. Blukoo, the first shot of mine wasn't exactly at night time, but it was getting dark. Shot at ISO1000, 1/2500 sec. Not done a huge amount of gig/night shots.

Sounds like it'll handle gig shots okay then.

I was photographing a comedy gig the other night with my 450D at ISO 1600, 1/60 f/2.8 and this was the result I was getting.



The lighting wasn't exactly ideal, and the photos show it.

Just out of curiosity, why did you stop the exposure down 2/3's? Is that just to reduce the chance of getting blown highlights?

The metering would have tried to over expose it, the scene being quite dark (I'm normally on centre weighted). So long as you dont blow the hilites you can ofcourse fix that in post BUT at ISO 3200 you have a lot less dynamic range than at ISO 100 so its easy to kill it.
