I like big boots .. (what car)
Discussion
Budget = 15-20k
Car requirements.
A big boot. Very big. With the back seats down I’m talking about 2 wheelie bins side by side with space on top for another two (or close to it)
With the seats up I want to be able to fit a tonne bag of soil.
(not that I’ll be carrying these things, but they seemed like good examples of size)
4wd SUV style of thing.
I need some decent ground clearance and a moderate amount of off road suspension.
Petrol or Diesel, MPG is pretty much irrelevant.
I would like an engine big enough so that it drives smoothly without too much effort.
Right now I’m thinking about a Discovery 3 – circa 2005 to get the cheaper tax bracket.
But, I’m interested in any other suggestions.

Q7's look HUGE on the outside, are they big inside?
If not, I'd say a Landcruiser or a Defender 110.
The Q7 has a long boot, but it’s surprisingly shallow and thin for such a big car.If not, I'd say a Landcruiser or a Defender 110.
The underfloor seats and underslung spare mean the base of the boot is very high in the car, and it’s actually not a tall car.
The 110 is a but rustic for the money I’m spending.
I want leather seats, electric windows and space to put my right arm.
I did try the Landcruiser – even in sports mode it was like driving a boat. I actually felt seasick when I was in the passenger seat.
It might have just been a bad example, but it put me right off.

Fair enough. I love Q7's to look at but have never been in one or around the boot. The underfloor seats and underslung spare mean the base of the boot is very high in the car, and it’s actually not a tall car.

Range Rover boots not any use?
I like the suggestion for the Dodge Ram with the cover. Most pickups would probably suffice in that same style but the US cars will be more comfortable I would assume?

A Land Rover of some kind is a fairly obvious choice in the UK. Or look at utility trucks or even Yank trucks (as someone else pointed out above).Car requirements.

If you are planning on putting a heavy weight in the back you really need to check the loadings though, as a 1 tonne payload is beyond most 4x4's and SUV's.
as the owner of a Ram I can say it is very comfortable and easy to drive. Its really nice having so much interior space. I get into normal cars now and I feel squashed. Makes a hell of a noise too (5.7 Hemi) or you could go mad and get the SRT10.
You can have all the toys, leather , air con etc

Would it be a possibility to run two vehicles, one for when you need to carry stuff, and one for when you don't?
I already run a few cars. This is the one that needs to carry stuff.
I might have to investigate some of the American monsters.
But, I’m not a fan of pickups in general.
I know you're not a fan but I'd go for a new-ish Nissan Navara that's been suggested above. There's one parked at my work and it looks great! You should be able to get a good one for well within your budget. You can get a cover over the back so it looks more like an SUV...

I'm personally a huge fan of American pickups. Personally I'd say look for the diesels, they all offer ok economy (18-25mpg ability) and are easily tuned to massively out perform the petrol offerings. This is the one that needs to carry stuff.

If you don't want a pickup, then you could look at some of their SUV's 4x4's too. Hummer H2 or H3. Suburbans, Navigators and the like.
