Just picked up an S4 (new shape) and it has got Barum Brauvaris 2 tyres fitted.

The car just does not feel right, very skittish and a bit unstable in the winds at the moment, could it be the tyres (they are 255/35 r19's) or something else. Getting the alignment checked soon to rule that out.

When I bought my car, it needed 2 tyres which I asked for in the deal. When I picked it up, they'd fitted Ditchfinders. I'd told them in between deposit and collection that I wanted "proper" tyres fitted, had to get into a bit of a scrap with them but they changed them for Pirellis in the end.

You've got to let them bed in a little, but I'm a little surprised to see a mid-range brand on a new S4.

Having said that, they review quite well. Personally I would've expected a premium brand though.

I'm guessing its not new, never seen Barums out of the factory from Audi. OP said its the new shape, not a new car...

I wouldn't put mid range tyres on somethign with 330hp...

When I did the deal for our current Mondeo ST Estate I noticed it needed two tyes. It had two budgets on the front (non-matching) and two Continental Sport Contact 2's on the back with a receipt to show they were about 600 miles old!

I just said I would expect the tyres to be replaced in the deal as it was about 500 miles away from MOT failure. He agreed and after a polite word about them not being budget tyres, I got matching SC2's on the front too.

If it is from a garage and they put the tyres on themselves (and it wasn't traded in like that), then I'd say you can moan at them if you want them changed.

Aah, I see. Thought he meant brand new and fitted by Audi. Sounds like a dealer has skimped a bit on rubber. . . .

I wouldn't fit "Barum" tyres on something with 130bhp, nevermind 330.

Have you checked the tyre pressure?

While I understand your concern, the wind is very gusty right now so that might not be anything to do with the tyres

Why not? it's a conti with a different name, much better than a P6000 'name' brand that's for sure

I have no idea if the OP tyre is any good (it does have a recommendation from Autobild) but I'm guessing you don't know how long they have been around and that they are part of Continental?

If Continental wanted their name on a good quality tyre, they'd put their name on it.

Tyres are the only bit that hold your car to the road. If you can afford a car, especially a high performance car such as an Audi S4, why skimp on your safety for the sake of an extra couple of hundred quid? If I was looking at buying said car, I'd be very put off by the fact that it's got these tyres on it also. Where else have corners been cut?

How much extra grip do the letters on the side give?

The Goodyear Eagles I had on my mx5 were terrible compared to the Barums on my dad's. A premium brand does not mean a premium tyre, and vice versa.

But I do agree that odd tyres ring alarm bells, especially on something 'sporty'.

The cars 3 yrs old and was bought from an independent, didn't really think it about on purchase as they were fine on the test drive. The tyres were fitted before the garage got hold of the car as have the receipt for them and they have prob 7-8mm left.

Question is would a mid range tyre affect the handling that much, compared to michelins etc ?

Eagle F1? The tyre that came top of the major tyre tests for years?

Then something was wrong with your MX5. Probably the geometry.

It's a new car to you, and I'm not sure in any case 19" 35 profiles are standard on a S4?( I stand be corrected) that size would certainly make most cars feel a bit skittish, and also can't see how the tyres would be affected by the wind.
I had 4 of the above fitted to my daily for the last 5000 miles , they are a smooth riding, quiet tyre, had no probs, and every review I read before purchasing had been positive.I'd suggest the problem lies not with the tyres, but elsewhere .Nice to see the usual ill-informed bks being spouted by others on this thread.
