What with the g/f giving up her company VW Golf this month (which we use as the Daily Hack), our dog, and a child expected early next year, my thoughts are turning to binning the fJCW and getting an all encompassing family wagon that'll still deliver me a rewarding drive.

Something that will allow us to cart around the dog (Whippet Lurcher) and a child with all the related paraphernalia, yet still return good MPG for frequent 300+ mile motorway round trips to our respective homes to see parents etc.

Most importantly, it mustn't be dull or something that I know I will resent driving after a few months. I honestly can't stand the thought of owning a Volvo or cope with RR/Disco fuel bills, so with circa £30k to spend on something used I'm thinking along the lines of a E70 X35d, E91 330/335d touring... or if I'm feeling brave a B7 RS4 Avant, chucking the money I save on cost price at the fuel bill (or is that just madness?!?).

... err and that's where I get a bit stuck. I need inspiration. rolleyes Thoughts and ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I have an irrational aversion to BMW's, so I would be heading to a subaru outlet for a legacy/outback/forester in your position

Biased hat on, but what about at 159 3.2 sportwagon? You could get a minter for well under 20k I reckon.

I recommend doing some maths to check your logic out. You are looking to spend £30k, then say you cannot handle the fuel bills of a LR (ignoring the contradictory RS4 comment here). The depreciation of the asset and service/maintenance costs will far outweigh any incremental fuel cost.

With the amount of money you have spaffed changing cars so frequently over the last 10 years, you could have bought (and run) practically anything.

You've had the fJCW how long exactly?! wink

Whatever you buy, I bet you keep it no more than 9 months.

Depreciation is a huge factor and something that has to be considered, but so does the ongoing fuel cost, which I why I made my my comment about the RS4. I'm at the early stages, hence the question of what I should consider.

You're right Tim, but on the other hand I wouldn't have had so much varied fun if I'd not have chopped & changed so often.

That's the circa budget I'm willing to spend up to (inc finance), not necessarily cash.

SRT-8 Grand Cherokee, although it won't be great on fuel. It will be fast and not dull.

Can you get a 300C estate in the UK with the V8 engine?

Impreza STI hatch

hot Forrester or Legacy of some kind

BMW of some description.

The Octavia is always a good choice. A few mods and you are looking at 300bhp, massive boot or estate versions, reasonable fuel, cheap to maintain and well under budget even with every option and mods.

So enough money left to get a weekend toy.

Do you really believe that? Have you driven anything else with a V10?

Amongst modern cars, I'll take the Gallardo engine, thanks. smile

I'm biased but does an E350cdi sport estate take your fancy? Vast loadspace (still the biggest in terms of volume of any new estate car on sale), frugal, and lovely 6 cylinder shove. Build quality back to excellent and decent residuals.

Your budget should buy you a very lightly used example.

I know i'll get boo-ed away for not suggesting something with a german badge or at least twenty peeled cows on the inside, but eh.

My focus wagon swallows my family (me, the GF and a 1 year old with all the needed junk) with relative ease. My 125hp 1.6 is a bit lethargic for my tastes, but the 150hp turbo is comfortably speedy, the ST pictured above should do roughly 250hp.

Practical, not to expensive, and in ST guise still has some PH-cred, although the 182hp version would be nice as well

Err, how about my brother's slightly modified SRT-10, my own E61 and precisely a Gallardo. The BMW is by far the best engine. The Viper has the biggest shove, but dies at 6000rpm, the Audi (oops, Lambo) is neither here nor there, and the BMW just revs and sings. Funny how the E60 would also spank the early Gallardo from rolling starts too (m5board). Lastly, if you are going to be argumentative using print material - the International Engine of the Year competition - it seems to me that the BMW V10 kept beating anything that was thrown at it by Audi for a few good years...
