I'd also suggest that anyone that picks a topic that is then chosen is honour bound to post an entry ....tart topic wanting posters (of which there were few) take note.

normally who ever wins picks the next theme, who ever wins that get to set the next and so and so...

Although no one entered the first theme I choose, someone suggested something else instead so I set that, no one entered that either. So maybe i'm just cursed!!!!

Don't be so hard on yourself smile

I posted on your recipe one that I couldn't access the recipes and probably others couldn't either...There were a few posters that asked for tarts and they got their wish but didn't post an entry.

How about a 'photo of your dinner/lunch/breakfast' comp then? they all seem to get a few entries and they could be doubly entried to your comp.

These always used to do quite well when they were just ingredient based, so you could do anything you wanted as long as it contained a specific ingredient.

I seem to remember that we used to get 10+ entries, and the majority of people who entered are still around, so no reason why it wouldn't work again.

Over the years I've noticed that internet forums in general become quieter over the summer, however this summer PH seems unusually slow.

Some formerly prolific posters on F, D & R - Cactussed, escargot, smack, Cotty, JonRB, SVX, the gavster - to name a few - seem to rarely post their culinary creations these days.

Is everyone out partying? Gone somewhere else? Or being worked to death?

Well we're in the throes of getting ready to move house, so that's why I've been a bit quiet of late. When we are in our new place, and more importantly, I have a shiny new kitchen to play in, normal service will be resumed.

Problem is, as we've discussed similar on the dinner thread in the past - is it a photography competition or a cooking competition?

I am around, just been too busy to cook thing worth posting... Although I have been experimenting with a few BBQ meat ideas with the warmer weather we had a few weeks back that had promise.

But I do miss Drew's creations, as I usually was busy swearing about them as they looked so f'ing good. B'stard.

I agree.

There is a bit of seasonal dropping out I think. I have been away and been on a diet, so Tart was out for me!

The comp works best when there are a reasonable number of entries. Why are people put off from entering? Masybe people are put off when a fabulous looking dish is posted early in the comp, so it is not worth bothering? However often the fabulous dishes aren't the winners and the comp only really works if there is a decent field of entries.

For me a lot of the fun is in coming up with a dish that I would not normally be cooking that week. Something that needs a bit of thought.

However, in my opinion, the reason the comp has 'lost its way' is that we are running out of ingredients / themes without getting to off the wall ideas. The simple ones (beef / pie / curry) work best, but we have pretty much done all of them now.

Some are maybe far too broad - for example 'curry'. One competition wipes out a massive ammount of potential dishes if we don't allow a theme to be repeated.

Maybe two ingredients again would work to keep the comps unique, but they always reduced the number of entries as there was always an ingredient that was hard to get or disliked.

What we have not tried is to be more prescriptive with a theme and an ingredient. So maybe a comp like 'chicken pie' or 'beef curry' would resolve this?
