Cat's gone all quackers!

Our cat has recently lost its meow, and only manages a quack noise, well a hoarse throaty meow. She used to be meowing all time when wanting food, to go in and out etc but now she barely makes a noise at all. It's like she has a sore throat.
She's not got any other symptoms like runny nose or eyes, no sneezing and she eats and drinks as per normal.
Wondered if you guys had any ideas on what's up?
She's been like it for a few days now and today she's has been pretty quiet, not wanting to try and attempt to talk. Googling seems to suggest its a viral infection, I was going along the lines of keep her inside and see if she recovers in a few days by herself or am i being an idiot and should I be looking at getting her to the vets asap?

Mine had a similar thing - combined with a damp nose, and I could hear a slight 'phlegmy' sound when she was breathing and purring.
Took her straight to the vets - diagnosed with a virus, as another poster said above.
They gave her some wide-spectrum antibiotics, and she was right as rain in a few days.

If it's been more than 3 days with no sign of improving she needs to see a vet, esp as she is now quiet in herself.
It may be viral and that will just have to run its course but she will be vulnerable to secondary infections which will not be nice and she may benefit from some anti inflammatories to speed up her recovery.

1st time in 4 years she's ever been poorly
she was due to go into a cattery for 3days as I'm relocating for work upto the northest of northern Scotland in a couple of weeks and my other half was sharing the drive to help me out. We've arranged for her mum to pet sit now though. Fingers crossed she'll pick herself up quickly after she gets some meds.
