Can anybody tell me how it would be cheapest to insure an MG Midget for a 17 year old?
I'm thinking of buying one as my first car and really need to know some details in terms of insurance. It would be great if somebody could tell me the following:

- A good insurance company that is worth looking into
- Any useful (but still legal) ways of reducing the cost of insurance
- Which model/mark of MG Midget will be cheapest to insure
- Any information that would be helpful to me

I figured this would be the best place to ask, as this actually has people that know what they're talking about on here... as opposed to Yahoo...

Oh and if you're going to use an insurance fancy key terms, can you explain what they mean in brackets because I'm pretty new to insurance etc.

Thanks

Will it be your only car?
Committing?
Garaged?
Limited milage?

Yes, my only car.
Yes I'll be committed to it, if that's what you mean?
Garaged, well I have a garage in which I can keep it when Winter comes along...
Limited milage... not really sure which is best

For the first year/ two years it will be more local driving, so no. After that I may need to drive to and from university every now and then.

I know someone who insured a triumph herald at 17 as an only car with footman james, I'd give them a call

Actually, I think we rang Footman James and said they won't insure a 17 year old on a Classic Car frown

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but most classic insurers won't touch 17 years old now. I guess a few too many younger drivers figured out the loophole, and their policy has changed accordingly

I wouldn't want to drive an unsafe car at that tender age, given propensity to bin it...

What do you think 17 year olds did 40 years ago?

Just because it's old doesn't mean it's unsafe.

It's a pretty good way to tell. No airbags, no crumple zones, no inertial-reel seatbelts, no swages in the chassis to deflect loads...

Got injured/died in bigger accidents.

I bet no one could even complete a journey pre 1992, what with all the mangled wrecks and body parts on the road rolleyes

I have no knowledge about MG insurance but if you look here:

http://www.tssc.org.uk/index.php?option=com_firebo...

You will see that, in the Triumph world at least, this route to cheap insurance for teens has been closed.

I have a daughter of similar age to the OP and was considering a Herald or similar on a club policy until the loophole was closed. You have to admit though that classic car insurance policies were never intended for this purpose and it`s not really surprising the industry has shut the door.

I wouldn't take the risk. It's as simple as that. I've been involved in 2 accidents and both were the fault of the other driver. I don't want to put my life in the hands of morons on the road.

Have a look at my car history. I'm thinking of buying something modern, since quite frankly I'm getting pretty damn sick of exploding in a ball of fire every time I try and drive to Tesco
