The BMW Sales chap did let on that it wasnt supposed to be wrapped but when they produced the painted version it turned out orange so they wrapped it.

Preferable to the matt wrapped versions, but that's not saying much. On an Audi (especially an R8), then yes. But not on a BMW. Solid white with ///M tricolour stripes/chequered graphics, yes.

I'd rather see incremental mechanical improvements as per previous evolutions of M3s, rather than just these seemingly incessant "limited edition" cosmetic jobbies.

Yup the BMW salesman offered me it there and then, I could even have it delivered next week if I paid now. I declined.
