C36 - Talk to me
Discussion
One has come up fairly close to me for €1750
Seems like a lot of motor for the money and it would scratch my AMG itch.
The write up:
Engine, drivetrain and interior are all excellent. Exterior is showing its age though. The usual mid 90s Merc rust is kicking in on the arches, leading edge of the bonnet and bottom of the doors. One of the rear rims is delaminating a bit and both front rims are looking a wee bit tired and could do with a refurb.
I brought it over from Scotland in 2009 (its still on UK plates, lives in my northern batcave) with lots of (mostly independant) history. Its only done about 3k since then. Gearbox and diff oil done at about 100k. Engine loom has been done too. I have another brand new loom here for it as well that was kindly donated at a pistonheads meet.
Has the 4 speed box which is apparently much more reliable than the 5 speed. Black leather interior in great shape, drivers seat is electric. Sunroof and e/w. Air con working fine. One of the few built without the intrusive always-on ASR traction control. Pulls strong and hard with a lovely wail over 3k RPM. Completely standard, no mods.
The C36 was one of the last old school hot-rod AMGs. Mercedes delivered a C280 Sport to the AMG factory who tore it down, bored and stroked the engine out to 3.6 and installed new Mahl pistons, new cams, air intake system, engine management, full stainless exhaust, wheels, suspension, brakes and body kit. 276hp and 284ft/lb. A rare enough sight these days, only 166 left on the road in the UK.
Has an annoying squeak from the rear parcel shelf which I never got around to sorting. Also a clunk from the front left on lock. Chin spoiler AMG badge is missing. Like ALL C36s it sounds like a diesel at idle when warm, this is normal! Eagle F1s up front, Stunners on the back
MOT'd till March 2013, taxed till Sept 2012. New ABS sensor and all brake lines replaced for last MOT.
Whats the general PH opinion??

Sounds like a very honest description.
I'd imagine the clonk would be a lower balljoint (IIRC that's what goes on 202's).
The rust he describes in normal - you'd need to keep on top if it.
Wheels dotto.
For C36-specific advice try mbclub.co.uk - a few current and former owners over there.
Also loads of C43 owners there too.
