Potential Discovery 2 buyer - Questions?
Discussion
Hi all, just wondering about a couple of things on a Discovery 2 facelift I've looked at today. As the dealer didn't seem to know what he was talking about I thought I'd ask here.
First off the diff lock, there was no sideward movement on the high/low selector to engage it. The silver sticker in front of the lever showed it but only high and low ratio was embossed on the top of the lever. I know earlier D2's didn't have it but thought it was reintroduced on the facelift versions? Or is it just an option? It's a Td5 'Adventurer LE', don't know if that makes a difference?
Second question is regarding the air suspension. When I pressed the button to raise the back end it rose very slowly and didn't seem to go particularly high. I'm not sure how much higher it should be but as said it took an age to move an inch or two. Is this a sign that the air bags or compressor are knackered or normal?
Sorry if I'm asking dumb questions but want to be sure if I'm worrying about something or nothing. I'm sure I'll come up with more silly points to annoy you all with before I finally get one.
Cheers gang,
Darren.

Thanks for the reply.
Ah that's what I was wondering with the diff-lock, it might just be a standard sticker then. It was an '03' plate. Do I really need a diff lock I wonder? I am planning on a little light off roading, but nothing too hardcore (as I've never done it).
I made sure the doors were shut and reached through the open window to lift the rear with the engine running, then stood back to watch it go up no more than a couple of inches at a glacial rate.
Shame as it drove very nicely.

Sounds about right to me.Ah that's what I was wondering with the diff-lock, it might just be a standard sticker then. It was an '03' plate. Do I really need a diff lock I wonder? I am planning on a little light off roading, but nothing too hardcore (as I've never done it).

Both sound OK to me.
Diff lock is correct for the year, but its no accident LR re-introduced them due to buyer pressure.
Without it, the electricery senses a spinning wheel and uses the brake on that wheel to stop the spin. OK until the brakes start to cook.
The air suspension on mine is fairly slow to raise and I think its all OK. Unlike the late RR classic with 'full' air suspension (and later RRs?), there is no tank of air to release into the suspension air bags, the pump runs whenever air is needed.
Did you see it in the rain, most sunroof leak..
Get yourselve over to www.thed2boysclub.co.uk, thats where you will find the best D2 advice.

The suspension does rise slowly (at least mine always has, and I've had it since 2003).
If it's got the ACS system instead of anti-roll bars, have a good look at all the pipes running along the RH underside - if they're rusty or leaking it's quite expensive (over £150 per pipe) and there are 4 leading frmo under the bonnet to the distribution block, and 2 running to the back of the car. They're also an absolute pig to replace. You can replace the ACS system with ordinary anti-roll bars as I did (cost about £300 in parts and I did it myself), but the ride isn't half as good, especially in bends, and it feels less stable when towing.
As long as you're handy with a spanner, there are enough cheap parts available to keep one of these running. I wouldn't like to be putting it into a garage.
Also watch out for the "Three Amigos" - ABS, TC and HDC lights.

There was no sign of leaking and it hammered down the entire day before, read about the sunroof issue somewhere so had a good check for damp and stains in the roof lining.
There's plenty about, so no particular rush for this one. There's a low miler in a LR dealer near here (way overpriced) so I'm thinking of a trip to blag a test drive and a good look round so I have a half decent benchmark to compare to.
Will check that site, I did look at 'Landyzone' but it seemed more about abusing people who ask questions than offering advice!!
I'm pretty handy with spanners and quite enjoy it, which I'm led to believe is no bad thing with any older Land Rover product
Cheers for the replies gents, all advice greatly appreciated.

Of the 10s of forums I've joined over the years for all maner of 2 and 4 wheels hobbys, Landyzone has been the only one I have given up on completely. I don't mind a bit of banter, but I expect some help/guidence/support/answers to accompany the abuse...There's plenty about, so no particular rush for this one. D2boys club is the opposite (despite the dubious name). All the help you need - and some support may well be needed. in 8 weeks mine has failed to start and air suspension collapsed..
Sounds right to me too.
The back suspension is great when towing or carrying lots of kit round. Mine probably takes about a minute to fully raise (50 mm / 2").
Lots of people replace it with springs but this causes further problems IMO.
Diff-lock linkages can seize up if they don't get used reasonably often. Its a good idea to use the lever every month or so.
Ours has been in the family since new, now on 105 k and still running great.
About to head of to the Alps in it for a 2 week break!
Cheers,
Sandy.

As mentioned earlier, diff lock is correct - mine still has the sticker saying that diff lock is present even though it isn't.
Mine has been converted to springs, not sure what the issues are (aside of losing the nice ability to compensate for heavy loads / towing). EGR valve delete is a nice simple tweak.

Just saw the more "recent" posts, apologies for missing them at the time.
Still on the look out, although I believe now is time of year where 4 x 4 prices start to rise so will probably be looking seriously again after the winter. Any advice greatly appreciated in the meantime though.
