My car at the moment is a Peugeot 206 Gti 180 which is a brilliant little car, however an oil leak has just reared its ugly head and I am losing my mind over it.

The car was serviced three months ago and I had a Unipart oil filter put on which has been fine until now. Once the car is up to temperature and has been driven oil will seep out, which is then found dripping from the filter.

I have had the car up on my mechanics ramp and I can't see/feel any oil around the top of the filter, but there are definitely signs of oil being blown back onto the bottom of the filter. Upon inspecting some of the hoses around that area, one hose which I believe is an oil breather which leads into the sump is quite oily. It has a black casing over it which is dry to touch, but it is only when you slide it back that the oil is on the pipe.

Would a breather pipe (if that is what it is) have enough oil flowing through it to make it leak and drip down the filter?

I know I'm not allowed to post in here, but the car is going into the garage next week and I would like to see if anyone else has had this problem on said car? My last vw lupo gti might have munched its gearbox and clutch, but never did it leak oil and I really hate oil leaks. This is probably why I have never owned a Land Rover.

Thank you,
P.B

Hi, I had a similar issue with my 205 gti, the oil filter wasn't screwed on tightly enough. Generally if there's no oil above the component in question you can be pretty sure that's where the leak is coming from. I'd try and tighten the filter a bit (grab the body and twist clockwise), wash the area thoroughly with an engine degreaser and see if it returns.

Change the oil filter and clean the mating surface.

Pop it off and double check that there isn't 2 seals in place as they are often not removed.
Also check the seal hasn't gripped up and rippled when installed.
Smear a bit of oil on the seal when refitting.
