Having borrowed one for a weekend I want to make the leap. Is eBay going to be the cheapest option or has anyone found a deal somewhere?

I got mine from fleaBay. Make sure you know the difference between the ANT+, the 2.4 and the wired! Only the ANT+ will work with a Garmin. You can easily swap freehubs between Campag or Shimano on the SL+ and newer Pro+, but not on the Elite or older Pro+.

Try a used one to save a load of cash. I find mine useful on the Turbo, but of less use on the road. SRM probably the way to go for racing I would think.

Don't listen to Ed, he's got no idea. Just all the gear.

£400-£475 is where you'll be looking I would think. I'm also thinking about it, but might go crank based.

Oh and they're pretty heavy which is fine for training - but less so in a race. If you're a fat knacker you notice this less. Think Okgo finds his fine... wink

biggrin

I thought you had one? Quarqs and the like are silly money the last time I looked? I dont care about the weight, the training bike is 10 kilos plus anyway wink

Not looking to race with one as I find data annoying most the time when I want to concentrate on riding. I dont even bother with a HRM as what are you going to do in a crit if there is a break and you need to go over peak to stay with it? Might have it all wrong but I think sometimes you can have too much information which can stop you from getting a better result on the day. Training is a different matter though.

No I borrowed one from a mate for a while, had to give it back

Agree on the rest of what you said, our TT bloke has done his fastest times with no power, odd given he is usually very exacting and reliant on figures.

One of the winter races I remember looking down and seeing 26/27 mph in the pack down to the club house (back when it was anticlockwise). Before I looked I was quite happy but I got it into my head that I was way out of my depth and within a few laps felt weak. The used it at Hog Hill and it just told me I was suffering all the time, like I didn't know that already! Haven't used it since but may mount it blind to review the race afterwards.

Out of interest why are you looking at crank based systems over hubs, just the weight or wheel preference? I always thought a powertap would be good as it could be used on any bike as long as you have the matching groups.

Coz I'd like to get race data too. I did race on the powertap hub at hillingdon as its flat enough for the weight not to matter.

Had an SL+, it broke. Sent it back, was still broken so got a refund. Mate had one, had to go back twice for the same problem. Seems to be an issue with the bearings and the wet weather we have in this country. I'm holding out for the Garmin Vector pedals if they ever release them.

Have you thought about renting one to see if you get on with it?
These guys rent them:

Personally i am also going to wait until the Garmin system is released as it makes the most sense for my needs.
However, if i was going to pull the trigger on one ahead of this i would be looking for a Quarq crank based system, they seem to be the best value ( i prefer the crank based units to the hub type ).

Doesn't the Vector use keo peddles? I wouldn't move from Speedplays now so its powertap or Quarq I reackon.

I've read that Quarks tend to drift during the ride (much more than SRM).
